Come Learn Ukrainian!

There is now a Ukrainian language program in the department of East European, Eurasian, and Russian Studies. It was offered at Dartmouth for the first time in Fall'23 and will now be a regular language sequence offering starting in 2024-25.

- check out the program trailer here.

Beginning Ukrainian (UKRA 11) is being offered in the Fall – it is called an intensive course because it combines the usual two term language sequence (i.e., Ukrainian 1 and 2) into a single term. The final course in beginning Ukrainian (UKRA 3) is being offered in the Winter.

Intermediate Ukrainian (UKRA 27) is offered in the Fall.

Here are some of the Ukrainian language program's highlights:

  • It's a new program – you can be part of the 2nd class to ever take Ukrainian at Dartmouth
  • It's fast – you can complete the first-year language sequence in just 2 terms
  • It's project-based – you will collaborate on projects like making language learning Tik Toks, translating current (war) literature, and staging plays – click here to read about the inaugural UKRA 11 students' final project and here to read their translations of Ukrainian war poetry as published in the literary journal Full Bleed
  • It's immersive – we will welcome to our classroom many native Ukrainian speakers, both in person and remotely, to learn their language with and from them
  • It's peer-based – each student will be paired with a partner from Ternopil Technical University in Ukraine for conversational practice and joint projects
  • It's unfiltered – you will be interacting with native speakers in real time to receive an unmediated insight into the wartime reality of ordinary Ukrainians.
