Biography
My research generally is based on the material of literary and non-literary translation, its theory, practice, and teaching, and concerns the history of translation and censorship in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. My current research divides into three strands outlined below, each associated with a continuous record of peer-reviewed publications and a sustained grant-seeking narrative. The first research strand develops the historiography of Ukrainian translation and includes newly published book chapters in Translation Studies in Ukraine as an Integral Part of the European Context (2023), Russian Literary Translation in the Global Context (2024), co-authored encyclopedic articles in The Routledge Handbook of the History of Translation Studies (2024), The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Censorship (2024), and authored an article accepted for publication by East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies. I have six new (2024) and forthcoming publications in the field of the history of translation and translation studies with a prominent press.
My second research field extends to the arena of digital folklore and popular art on social platforms, including mocking translation and humorous/parodistic genres of neo-folklore as a weapon in the Russo-Ukrainian information wars. Projects include my article "Deconstruction of Russia's Newspeak in Ukrainian Humorous Translation and Digital Folklore" (2023); papers on the language of Russo-Ukrainian war; a peer-reviewed collective volume, of which I am the contributing editor, Living the Independence Dream: Ukraine and Ukrainians in Contemporary Socio-Political Context (Vernon Press, 2024). The book encompasses research on Ukrainian historical narratives, culture, language, and identity and includes memoirs by prominent representatives of the US-based Ukrainian diaspora. My chapter contribution focuses on Ukrainian digital folklore as a people's cyber war and popular mobilization, verbal and visual arts as a reaction to the Kremlin propaganda Newspeak since 2014. Having observed the historical dynamics and diversity of jokes, memes, caricatures, art posters and art objects, I discuss humor, creative writing, and graphic arts in public cyberspace as a field of resistance to the aggressor state. My discussion features wartime poetry, digital verses, neologisms and (onomastic) euphemisms of the Russo-Ukrainian war.
My new book project, a monograph on translators' activism and sociopolitical and cultural agency, is entitled Shifting the Tides of Power: Literary Translators in Ukraine and the Diaspora. This book consolidates my previous studies on the topic of language and power in translation, focusing on translation as an instrument of ideological influence as well as counterinfluence, or resilience to ideological pressure, and on the interconnection between translation and censorship. Ongoing research will examine the peculiar power of translation: its double-edged potential to act as an instrument of ideological influence and concurrently as a tool of resistance to various kinds of ideological pressure and censorship. The intermediate stage of this project has resulted in several smaller publications, such as a book chapter in Normativity and Resilience in Translation and Culture (2024)
Shifting the Tides of Power: Literary Translators in Ukraine and the Diaspora reconfigures and significantly expands the Ukrainian literary and cultural space by including in discussion the understudied and unknown translation projects and microhistories of translator-writers and literary editors. The role of translation as an effective tool of modern war cultures will be highlighted for the first time. I will thus look at translation activities and products through the lens of power structures. My perspective will make an important contribution to the broad area of Ukrainian, Slavic, Translation and Culture Studies.
